'Croc Knot' wood carving in pine knot and custom turned stand
This is an alligator pine knot carving I did recently that also needed a way to be shown off so i made a little stand for it on my lathe. The knot is another from the Appalachian trail in Pennsylvania. The stand is something I've been thinking about for a while. With sculptures that are round and carved on all sides it is very difficult to hang them or present them. Also when people come to my house they enjoy handling pieces. Since this is sculpture and we live in a world of 2 dimensional art it is nice to feel things for a change. Touching adds a sense to the experience but also moving the object even a little gives the brain a different view and thus more information and stimulation. This piece is already sold by the way. contact me if you want one like it made.
The stand was turned on an old shopsmith and i tried something new. I dont have a lathe chuck anyway but at this size they may not be able to grab tightly. So! The super mini lathe chuck worked great. I was able to finish both sides of pieces by covering the finished end in a rag to protect it from the drill chuck jaws.
