a new video, Deep Woods Ventures Knives, some woodspirit blocks...

i've been working on a video that i shot last night. after the 'king carving' video, i wanted to jump off in the opposite direction and do a simple and fast carving. I had bought a package of basswood blocks some time back..all the same size, about 2.75 by 2.75 by 1.75. I started carving studies on the corners and found they had good dimensional proportions for doing a whole 'corner head/face'. So then i did another quickly...and another and another...playing around with sizes and styles and finally taping a whole carving.
During all this I received some long awaited and sought after knives from Deep Wood Ventures. I've needed a knife to suggest to carvers that i trust and like and supports a craftsman worthy of support. Deepwoods was a no brainer. Paul, the knifesmith is a great guy and i've been looking up to his work for years. He makes beautiful knives...easily the nicest on the market. It's not just the shaping of blade and handle but he gives an option of 'figured' wood handle. This is generally burl or something of the like. The finished product is amazing. In other markets this guy (and his craft work) would be on the cover of magazines...but this is wood carving. Hand made work of any level is not often seen by outsiders and not propagated much to insiders either. We don't have much centralized media to reflect our craft. The world of wood carving is held mostly in the minds of people like me. here's a link to deep woods ventures http://deepwoodsventures.com/

here's the video spirit face along with the two knives i got. the top is a figured handle and the bottom is called the scalpel. It's meant to be an intro knife with a low price tag, simple features with pro function. You can see that even without the figured handle it's not too hard on the eyes. here you can really see that handle and mirror polish on the blade. That's a hoof print burned into the handle. it's the deep woods venture logo/maker's mark.

here's all the studies together. you can see there's a viking or two in there!
